The Modernized Immigrant Visa

Modernized Visa

The U.S Immigrant Visa

It is one of the most coveted pieces of paper in the world. Those who hold it has the possibility to live, to work, or be reunited with family in the United States.

The U.S government goes to great lengths to ensure that only qualified people get visas. For immigrant visas people who will enrich the fabric of our country without compromising its security that means people with family ties, with job offers. What do these high standards mean for us and for the applicant? Lots of paper and paper slows the process.

The current immigrant visa system is highly inefficient. Over 450,000 paper files are mailed no less than six times through three government agencies to points spanning thousands of miles across the globe. That is a lot of paper, lot of miles and a lot of time. But that is changing.

On November 21, 2014, President Obama issued a presidential memorandum on Modernizing and Streamlining the U.S Immigrant Visa System for the 21st Century. We were given 120 days to imagine a new generation of visa applications, to imagine how we can make our processes more efficient to better serve our partners in this process: applicants and their petitioners. So what we see here is also an opportunity to make the system easier and more efficient for both applicants and our adjudicators to use.

Starting this year, we are modernizing and streamlining our application process so that much of our work can be done online. We will reduce government costs, improve services for applicants and reduce the burden on their families and employers while remaining vigilant about our national security. These steps will help us focus more on the people and less on the paper.

By removing the paper, our staff is going to be able to redirect their focus away from those physical files and onto the applicants themselves and engage in a more robust dialogue with them to help them understand what they need to do in order to deliver the service they are seeking from us.

This is the first of several steps to improve and modernize our visa system, making it more efficient, faster, and overall delivering a higher level of customer service.
